As Alex traces the pattern across global infrastructure, her daughter Maya investigates its human cost: vanished newsroom jobs, machine-generated reporting, and institutions that continue operating after the people inside them have been discarded. With Alex’s trusted friend Sam helping them stay grounded—and eventually evade the authorities—the three confront a world in which automation has become autonomy without anyone consciously choosing it.
The Engineer

The Grounding Presence
An off-grid dog trainer, Alex’s closest friend, and one of the few people who understands the silences and intense focus through which she processes the world. Sam does not work at Helios Cloud and knows little about computers; his recurring reminder—“I’m a dog trainer, Alex”—forces her to translate technical jargon into human terms. His patience makes him her first call when the pattern emerges, and his grounded independence becomes vital when Alex and Maya need to escape the authorities.
